YUMA, Ariz. – The City of Yuma Fire Department (YFD) received notification of a $1.4 million award received from the Staffing for Adequate Fire and Emergency Response (SAFER) grant, to be utilized to fund nine firefighter positions.
Funding from this SAFER grant will allow the fire department to bring a ladder truck back into service and will help fund nine firefighter positions, as the City deals with cost increases in pensions for both police and fire personnel.
“We are excited that this grant was awarded to the City of Yuma,” said Fire Chief Steve Irr. “This will allow our department to get back to its full strength after having to cut an apparatus.”
City Administrator Greg Wilkinson explained the City will leverage federal funds to cover the 75 percent of the needed additional funds to pay for nine firefighters positions over the next two years, then for the 35% of additional needed funds in the third year as the grant funds are utilized.
The SAFER grant aims to improve staffing and deployment capabilities for local fire departments so they can respond to emergencies more effectively.
Acceptance of the grant award and the grant award renewal will be placed on a future City Council meeting agenda for approval.
