4 Main Reasons To Clean Your Carpets
Carpet cleaning is about more than a casual vacuuming every week. That’s a part of it, but vacuuming never catches everything. We walk on our carpets every day and each time we do, we grind some of the dirt and dust deep into the carpet fibers. This constant pressure causes them to condense into crystals that dig into the fibers. A vacuum cannot remove these on its own. You need to properly shampoo and deep clean your carpets to break these crystals up so you can get them thoroughly cleaned.
But why should you go to all this trouble? We spoke to Alpine Cleaning, a company that provides carpet cleaning services in Cache Valley to get the answer. Here’s what they told us.
1. Saves Money By Increasing Longevity of Your Carpets
Those crystals that from from dirt and grime in your carpet? Remember how I said you can’t vacuum them out because they stick into the fibers? Well, it turns out they do more than just that. When they form these crystals, they actually cut and fray the fibers, too. This damages the carpet. Over time, it causes your carpet to get ratty and ugly and even harder to clean than before. It’s not easily noticeable as it happens, but if you skip out on a full, deep carpet cleaning, you end up needing to replace it years before you would otherwise. This costs you more money in the long run – not to mention just how much time you spend pulling up and replacing them.
2. Improves Resale Value of the Home
If you’re ever looking to resell your home, you’ll find that a lot of things can influence the resale value. If you don’t clean your carpets regularly, it will negatively impact your home’s value. Any real estate agent looking to assign value will see the old, dirty, damaged carpet and think, “The buyer’s probably going to have to replace this. I’ll have to lower the sale price to convince someone to buy it.”
It’s really as simple as that. If buyers might have to replace the carpet after buying the home, they’re not going to want to pay as much, since replacing the carpet will be an extra expense. Regular deep cleaning for your carpets will help you avoid that, as it keeps the carpets in good shape. Not to mention a clean carpet is just appealing to buyers. This also holds true if you’re renting your property out, or using it as an AirBnB.
3. Improves Health
It’s not just dust that gets in your carpet. You also get pollen, cat and dog dander, and other allergens. Walking around on the carpet may kick these up and spread them back into the air. This means you could find allergens floating around in your house long after allergy season is over. Even if you don’t have allergies, these particles can all still contaminate the air in your house. Have you ever had a night where you’re coughing and sneezing all night long and can’t sleep well because of it? This might be the cause.
Carpet cleaning can fix this problem. A deep cleaning will remove all of that gunk along with the built up dirt. You’ll have fresh air to breathe. You’ll sleep better at night and have less problems with allergies. This will lead to an overall improvement in your health.
4. Mental Health Improvements
When your body feels bad, your mind feels bad, too. If you’re kept up at night from coughing and sneezing because of the dust and allergens, you’ll feel miserable. Not only that, the dirt and grime discolors your carpet and can feel unpleasant to touch. It might get on your clothes, or against your skin. It bothers multiple senses and just makes you feel things are wrong, even if you’re entirely sure why. The mind and body are links and if one feels icky, so does the other. They feed into each other, creating a vicious cycle that just makes you feel worse and worse.
Cleaning your carpets won’t make all your problems go away, but it will take away some things that might be stressing you out in your home. Getting rid of those problems will make it easier for you to cope with other stresses in life. It’s worth it just for that.
How Often Should I Get My Carpets Cleaned?
Exactly how often you should clean your carpets depends on many things. The big factor is how much foot traffic an area gets. If it’s an area that lots of people walk on regularly, you’re going to need to clean it more often than a room you only go into now and then. At minimum, you should have your carpets cleaned at least once a year, but for very high traffic areas, more times may be necessary to keep it in good condition. Generally, twice a year is the most common recommendation. Once in the spring to clean out all the chemicals they use to clean the road, and once in the fall just before winter so that your house is super clean for all that time you’ll be spending indoors because of the cold.
Following this advice, you’ll see improved longevity in your carpets, saving you money on replacing them, and it will get rid of allergens that may be keeping you from getting a good night’s rest. You’ll feel more comfortable in your own home and therefore be in a better mood outside the home.
