What Makes a Better Tire?
Buying new tires ranks pretty low on the list of things most people want to spend their money on. But tires are a major investment, and the choices can be very confusing. So how do you know whether or not you are making a wise choice when it comes time to replace your tires?
It can be intimidating for the unprepared because tires often appear identical, and each manufacturer claims its tires are superior. But the process of choosing which tires to buy doesn’t have to be painful.  Answering a few simple questions can make tire-buying a little easier.

  1. How long should a set of tires last? One way to get an idea of the life expectancy of a tire is to look at the warranty. If a tire is warranted for 40,000 miles, you can expect to be able to drive on it for approximately 40,000 miles. Another way is to look at the Uniform Tire Quality Grading (UTQG) rating. The U.S. Department of Transportation requires each manufacturer to grade its tires under the UTQG labeling system and establish ratings for tread wear, traction, and temperature resistance.

  1. What are the weather requirements? If you live in a place like Washington or Oregon, you will want to invest in a more capable wet-weather tire than you would if you lived in a desert area like Nevada or Arizona. If you live in an area where snow is a factor, a good four-season tire will be the minimum of what you need. You may want to invest in a set of snow-tires for the winter months, and then swap them for standard tires in the milder months.

  1. What speed rating do you need? There are different speed ratings on tires depending on how fast you will be driving. Most people need a tire with no more than a speed rating of 150.

  1. How much tire noise is tolerable? Some tread designs are noisier than others. If your driving is mostly in-town, this won’t be much of a factor. But if you do a lot of highway driving, you will want to consider your options.
