Salt Lake City (July 15, 2015) – Tournament organizers today announced plans for the 2015 Web.com Tour's Utah Championship being held July 30 – August 2 at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club. In addition to being played at a new venue this year, the tournament will honor Billy Casper and the two sponsor exemptions have been announced.
This year’s event will pay special to Utah golf legend Billy Casper, who recently passed away. A new Billy Casper Cup has been created and was unveiled at the Utah Championship media day. In addition to receiving a winner’s trophy, the Utah Championship champion will be recognized by having their name engraved on the Cup. The Cup will be displayed in the Billy Casper trophy case housed in the Thanksgiving Point Golf Clubhouse.
Billy has had significant impact on the sport of golf, especially in the state of Utah. Since his first visit to Utah in 1959, he tirelessly championed the State, its people and its culture, making his adopted home his permanent residence. In addition to his legendary prowess as a professional golfer, fifty-one PGA TOUR wins, three of them being majors, Mr. Casper has been a treasured asset to the people of Utah through his considerable support of a wide range of important charitable organizations.
Earning the highly coveted unrestricted exemptions are Utah native Gipper Finau and University of Delaware graduate Justin Martinson. These players will join the field of 156 golfers competing for a PGA TOUR card. All fifty PGA TOUR cards will come from playing the Web.com Tour season, as well as the season ending Web.com Tour series event.
- Gipper Finau – A Utah native and West High School graduate, Gipper holds a unique place in Web.com Tour history when he played on the weekend at the 2006 Utah Championship at Willow Creek Country Club. At 16 years, 20 days, he remains the youngest player in history to make a Web.com Tour cut. He went on to tie for 58th that week after earning an invite into the tournament by shooting a 63 at the Monday qualifier. He is also the fourth-youngest player to play in a Web.com Tour event, behind only 13-year-old Michelle Wie, Gregory LaVoie and Carter Jenkins.
This will be Gipper’s third appearance in the Utah Championship. Besides his 2006 success, he also played in the 2007 tournament, where he missed the cut.
- Justin Martinson – Justin Martinson is a “Big Break The Palm Beaches” alum, appearing on the Golf Channel show in 2014. Martinson was born in South Korea but grew up in the Philadelphia suburb of Avondale, Pa., and he attended college at the University of Delaware.
Martinson turned pro in 2011 after a celebrated amateur career in the Northeast that saw him win the Philadelphia Amateur, the Delaware Amateur and the Colonial Athletic Association individual championship in 2010. He also captured the Delaware Open in both 2009 and 2011.
Martinson has played in four previous Web.com Tour events—the latest coming at the 2013 Mid-Atlantic Championship in Maryland, where he missed the cut.
"As a partner of the PGA TOUR and host of the Utah Championship, the Utah Sports Commission is thrilled to add these talented players to the field of world-class golfers who will be playing in the event," said Jeff Robbins, president and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission.
Local professionals will also have an opportunity to earn one of twelve spots determined at a qualifying event being held on Monday, July 27th at Oakridge Country Club.
The Utah Championship will be played July 30 – August 2 at Thanksgiving Point Golf Club in Lehi. Tickets can be purchased at the box office of Thanksgiving Point Golf Club. For information and volunteer opportunities, please visit www.utahchampionship.com or call 801-328-2372.
