“I want to extend my congratulations to Jeri Williams on her appointment as Phoenix’s new Chief of Police. With the appointment of Chief Williams, Phoenix is making history, making us the largest city in the country with women leading both our Police and Fire departments. This should be encouraging to all women looking to advance in non-traditional fields, especially public safety.
The appointment of Chief Williams is also a landmark for the City Council District that I represent, District 8. Chief Williams spent 22 years rising through the ranks of the Phoenix Police Department, and during that time was a true leader in the District 8 community. Her appointment marks a homecoming, and I know many in District 8 are excited to see her return.
As the Phoenix Police Department enters a new era, we have lots of work ahead of us. Now more than ever, it is critical that the Phoenix Police Department strive toward maximum transparency and accountability, and that our Phoenix Police Department receive the support they need from elected officials and from the community in helping affirmatively reach out and develop positive, constructive relationships with residents from every background and affiliation, while at the same time making sure the Phoenix Police Department is an agent of change in addressing structural concerns faced by municipalities around the country. I have every confidence that Chief Williams is up to this task, and I look forward to working with her on making our nation’s best Police Department that much better.”
