Reno, Nevada (October 2, 2018) – The Regional Transportation Commission (RTC) of Washoe County is planning closures on Vassar Street and Holcomb Avenue for construction and underground utility work as part of the Virginia Street Project.
· On October 2 through 4, Vassar Street will be closed at Virginia Street.
· On October 3 through 5, Holcomb Avenue will be closed at Virginia Street.
Northbound traffic will be detoured to Plumas Street to Mary Street to Center Street. Eastbound traffic on Mt. Rose Street will still be able to turn right onto Virginia Street during the closures. Drivers going northbound can also continue to use Wells Avenue to Vassar Street to Holcomb Avenue or Center Street. Side streets throughout the corridor remain open to provide access to Midtown as well.
One-way southbound traffic is in place on Virginia Street already as part of the project, and that traffic will not be affected by these closures.
The RTC encourages the community to support the businesses along this corridor, which remain open and accessible during construction.
Construction operations are weather permitting.
About the project:
This more-than-$80-million investment in our community will create connectivity between Midtown Reno and the University of Nevada, Reno (UNR), and will support economic development, enhance safety, and improve livability in the corridor.
The project addresses critical transportation needs including improving transit operations by extending the Virginia Line RAPID transit service to UNR, correcting ADA sidewalk deficiencies, improving traffic operations and beautifying the corridor. Up to 300 trees will be added to the corridor as part of the project.
The project is funded with fuel tax revenue, federal and private funds.
