Vail to Host Public Presentation on Autonomous Vehicles, other Emerging Technologies by Noted Author and Futurist Rutt Bridges on Aug. 7

The Town of Vail has arranged for noted author and futurist Rutt Bridges to lead a presentation and discussion on autonomous vehicles and other emerging technologies during the Tuesday, Aug. 7 Vail Town Council meeting. Members of the community as well as representatives from agencies and organizations from throughout the region are welcome to attend. The presentation is listed as agenda item 5.1 and will take place from approximately 6:15 until 7:15 p.m. in the Vail Town Council Chambers, 75 S. Frontage Road. The session will include opportunities for questions and comments from the public.

Bridges is a keynote speaker and executive director of Understanding Disruption, a new non-profit organization based in Denver which researches the economic, social and geopolitical consequences of emerging technologies. A geophysicist, his 2015 book, “Driverless Car Revolution,” predicted many details of the rapid advances in autonomy that exist today. His new book, “Our Driverless Future: Heaven or Hell?” presents an implementation strategy aimed at eliminating congestion while professing net savings to America of over a trillion dollars a year. Much of that savings is based on commuters who switch from driving alone to sharing free on-demand door-to-door driverless mobility. The savings is also the result of far fewer highway fatalities and injuries, more productive travel time, reduced demand for parking and highway expansions, and reduced climate change impact.

Bridges was a keynote speaker at the Colorado Municipal League Conference held in Vail earlier this summer attended by Vail Town Manager Greg Clifton. Following the conference, Clifton extended an invitation for Bridges to return to Vail to continue the conversation locally. “As a premier resort community that is directly accessed by a very busy interstate highway, this topic has very real implications for towns like Vail on so many fronts,” says Clifton. “This will be a very engaging and intriguing dialogue.”

For those unable to attend the session in person, the meeting will be live on Comcast Channel 5, is livestreamed at www.highfivemedia.org and the recording will be available the Thursday following the meeting at www.highfivemedia.org.
