Hundreds gathered on the steps of the capitol on Saturday, January 19th to express their support for the 2nd amendment. ???¦?Gun Appreciation Day???¦? took place at state capitols all across the nation, and Salt Lake City was no exception. Organized by Utah Guns, this event drew nearly 1,500 supporters of gun rights to hear several speakers and show their support for the right to bear arms. Among the speakers were Pastor Kevin Brooks of the Victory Baptist Church, chairman of the Utah Shooting Sports Council Clark Aposhian, and Representative Brian Greene of the Utah House of Representatives.
Greene, the final and keynote speaker of the event, spoke largely on his legislation, the Second Amendment Preservation Act, which would give local sheriffs to arrest federal agents attempting to seize firearms from Utah citizens. Many such proposals are coming forward in many states, in response to President Obama???¦??s Executive Action regarding gun control. These proposals include increased background checks for the purchase of firearms, an assault weapons ban, and a restriction on magazine capacity. The proposed legislation is currently in committee but is expected to be finalized this week. For more information on the Second Amendment Preservation Act, visit http://le.utah.gov/.
