Unified Government Right-of-Way Mowing Changes

Public Works staff is currently in the process of mailing out over 2,500 letters to property owners as a friendly reminder of the changes in the Right-of-Way mowing policy and their maintenance responsibility as a property owner.
All letters should be mailed by early next week with future follow-up being conducted by Code Enforcement.

Letter
Dear Property Owner,

This letter serves as a friendly notice that all property owners are responsible for mowing and maintaining the Right-of-Way (ROW) on their property. On most properties, this would typically be the first twenty feet from the edge of the roadway or curb back onto the property.

In the past the UG Street Division has mowed many of these properties but due to results from recent community surveys that showed residents are not satisfied with overall street maintenance, the UG has made several changes to allow the Street Division to focus resources and time on core responsibilities, such as maintenance of streets, curbs, and alleys. Also, most homeowners in residential neighborhoods maintain their ROW so it is only fair to expect others to maintain theirs as well.

Roadside ditches are also to be groomed as consistent with codes as is practical. Ditches are not to be filled in without UG approval and vegetation is not to be removed or killed to avoid scouring that will result in more difficult maintenance.

Again, this letter serves as a friendly notice of this change and the expected responsibility of you as a property owner. Going forward, those who fail to mow/maintain their ROW may receive additional communications and the possibility of fines.

If you have questions or concerns on this matter feel free to contact the Public Works Department at (913) 573-5400.
