The annual Spice on Ice fundraiser was held on Tuesday, March 26 at the George S. Eccles Ice Center in North Logan, Utah and the top chefs in Cache Valley were present to judge and be judged.
I have tried for several years to have my schedule match up with this event, but have not been able to attend until this year. I wasn???¦??t sure what to expect, but have heard that there were always great offerings from the local chefs.
The Eccles Ice Center has an interesting way of using the center for many functions. They have a special insulated covering that goes on top of the ice arena to make it usable for other events such as the dinner for Spice on Ice. With nearly 300 people in attendance, it was a ???¦?sold-out???¦? crowd. Many of the people had been attending the Spice on Ice for several years. And, the reason seemed to be the great food and the opportunity to see what the local chefs are able to create.
There were several other establishments who participated with hors d???¦??oeuvres before the dinner started. These included Culinary Concepts, Firehouse Pizza, Pioneer Valley Lodge, El Sol, Kabuki, New York Deli, Apple Spice Caf???? and Bakery and Gias.
This year, the chefs who participated were: Daniel Warnick from USU Dining Services; Robyn Monk from Herm???¦??s Inn; Travis Rigby from Savannah???¦??s BBQ; Luis Ramos from Gaucho Grill; Ted Mathesius from Copper Mill; Gordon and Rosa Brewster from Mis Amores Mexican.
The entrees ranged from smoked pork to stuffed ravioli with butternut squash. I have to say that each of the entrees served were well prepared and tasted great.
The chef who took home the ???¦?gold???¦? was Luis Ramos from Gaucho Grill with his entr????e of Brazilian pork, chicken and roasted pineapple. Chef Ramos won the Judges Award and the People???¦??s Choice Award. Runner-up with the judges was a tie between Savannah???¦??s BBQ and USU Dining Services. And, the runner-up People???¦??s Choice Award went to Ted Mathesius from the Copper Mill.
If you have ever wondered what it would be like to attend Spice on Ice, mark your calendar for next year. It was well worth it and I will be back next year.
