We were heading to Orcas Island, Washington for a weekend wedding and decided to make it a road trip. It had been quite awhile since I had driven between my home and the Seattle area, so I was kind of looking forward to seeing the country and how it had changed. (There are more grapes now for wineries mixed in with the apple orchards.)
We decided to make it a relatively easy day and stop in Cle Elum, Washington for the night. We found a room at the Econolodge (very clean) and asked where there was a good place to eat in town. Without hesitation, he said The Cottage Caf??? just across the street.
Everything in Cle Elum is pretty much located on Main Street and not a busy street at that. However, when we drove through town, we noticed that nearly every restaurant was packed.
We walked across the street and walked into a diner with a comfortable feel, an in-house bakery and a ??ª?seat yourself??ª? sign. Honestly, I haven??ª?t seen a sign like that forever.
The first two things I noticed on the menu was that there was a little bit of everything; salads, soups, burgers, sandwiches, plate meals and breakfast. The second thing I noticed was the prices. The breakfast (served all day) was the least expensive with items in the $6 range, while everything else seemed to start at $9 and went to about $16 for the entrees.
I decided to try the Rueben. It has been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. I know, call me strange. What kid likes a Rueben? The sandwich came out fairly quickly with the fresh green salad I ordered to go along with it. The Rueben was not overly large, but definitely large enough with tender corned beef and sauerkraut. The salad had plenty of dressing served on it. In fact, this may be the first time in years that I thought the salad had too much dressing. I enjoyed the entire meal.
The restaurant seems like it has been around for quite some time. However, it was spotless inside and everything was comfortable, but very updated decor. There were a lot of locals eating which is always a good sign for a restaurant.
If you happen to be passing through Cle Elum around meal time, it is located at 911 East First. Take a change and stop for a bite. I know I wouldn’t hesitate to stop at The Cottage Caf??? again.
