Skate in the Park opens in Acacia Park


COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The City of Colorado Springs, in collaboration with Downtown Colorado Springs, is pleased to announce the return of ice skating in Acacia Park (115 East Platte Avenue). Skate in the Park presented by Academy Bank is open to the public Friday (Nov. 9) to Jan. 21, 2019. The only outdoor rink in the area, Skate in the Park will host its grand opening celebration, including free public skating, on Nov. 16, followed by a tree lighting ceremony and visit from Santa on Nov. 17. Other special events will be held throughout the season.

Nov. 16 (5-10 p.m.): Grand Opening Celebration

Free public skating, including skate rentals, offered from 5-10 p.m.

Nov. 17 (4:30-6:30 p.m.) Tree Lighting Ceremony and Santa Visit

The tree will be lit by Santa at 5:30 p.m. Other activities include live music, courtesy of the Colorado Springs Children’s Chorale; a photo booth; and kid-friendly activities. This event is free to attend; however, ice skating, which includes skate rental, is $10. Anyone who downloads and returns a completed coloring sheet to the event will receive $1 off ice skating on Nov. 17. The sheet can be downloaded from DowntownCS.com/skate.

Skate in the Park Admission and Hours

Admission is $10 per skater and includes skates. Children 4 and under are free with a paid adult. A $1 discount is available for patrons with a valid Military ID. Hours vary, and a full schedule, including special activities, is available at DowntownCS.com/skate. Private events and group rates are also available.

Themed Activities

Several themed activities will be offered throughout the season, including the opportunity to share the ice with members of U.S. Figure Skating and the Colorado College Tigers ice hockey team. For the first time, a Shinny Tournament for adults ages 18 and older will also be offered. Tournament details can be found here:coloradosprings.gov/sertich-ice-center/page/hockey-sertich-ice-center.

Other special events are as follows:

· Dec. 9 (all day): Broncos Skate sponsored by Insurance Technologies, $1 off admission for wearing orange/blue

· Dec. 15 (4-6 p.m.): Learn to Skate with U.S. Figure Skating, free admission

· Dec. 21 (4-6 p.m.): Skate with Matilda, sponsored by the Fine Arts Center

· Jan. 3 (4-6 p.m.): Skate with members of the U.S. Figure Skating Team

· Jan. 4 (5-7 p.m.): Ugly Sweater/Funny Hat Skate, sponsored by UCHealth, $1 off admission for wearing an ugly holiday sweater or funny hat

· Jan. 5 (4:30-6:30 p.m.): Skate with members of the CC Tigers Ice Hockey Team

A program of the City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services department and Downtown Colorado Springs, Skate in the Park supporters include presenting sponsor Academy Bank, gold sponsor Colorado Springs Utilities, and silver sponsors U.S. Figure Skating, Insurance Technologies, the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center, and UCHealth.
