Services planned for Bob Terrell, former city manager

Funeral services for retired City Manager Bob Terrell are set for 2 p.m. Sept. 26 at Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 2823 N. Houston St. in Fort Worth.

Terrell, 74, died at his home Sept. 22 after fighting pancreatic cancer.

After earning a master of public administration degree from the University of Kansas, he became a budget analyst for the City of Fort Worth in 1974. In 1977 he became executive director of a startup nonprofit agency, Fort Worth Economic Development Corp., which provided management and technical assistance to small and minority-owned businesses.

Terrell returned to the City of Fort Worth in 1979 as an assistant to the city manager. He was promoted to assistant city manager in 1985 and served in that capacity until 1992. He was appointed city manager in 1992 and served in that role until he retired in 2000.

He was the first African-American city manager in Fort Worth and served longer than any previous city manager since the council/manager form of government was adopted in 1925.

After retiring from the city, he worked for engineering firm CH2M HILL until he retired in 2016.

Terrell was an avid sports fan and was often found in his recliner with multiple television sets broadcasting games and sports events throughout the house. He enjoyed listening to jazz, tending to his garden and grilling on the back porch.
