Sandy City’s Annual Recognition of October as the National Domestic Violence Awareness Month

On October 15th, 2018 at 10:00am, Sandy City Police Department will host a press conference in honor of National Domestic Violence Awareness Month. Mayor Kurt Bradburn will be present to speak about Sandy City’s recognition of October being National Domestic Violence awareness month. Chief William O’Neal will also be helping to bring awareness to this ever important topic during the press conference. Chief O’Neal will share how domestic violence is affecting our city and what efforts are being made by the police department to intervene, assist and educate.

This year we are excited to be hosting a week long set of events to build awareness in our city. Some of those events will include a domestic violence awareness seminar where information and resources will be given. There will also be a question and answer period. We are excited to partner with local shelters and help collect donations they need for the families they serve. We are eager to hold a new youth-oriented PSA (Public Service Announcement) contest amongst the youth within our city. They will be asked to submit a short PSA through Facebook Live, Instagram stories or musical.ly. The winner of the contest and the winning submission will be featured at the press conference. For more information on the PSA contest, please contact Jennifer Hamilton at 801-568-6059 or jhamilton@sandy.utah.gov

Our platform this year is Behind Closed Doors. It is common to have domestic violence occur in the home, behind closed doors. Many domestic violence incidents do not get reported because they happen behind closed doors. We hope the events will open the door on the issue of domestic violence. If you suspect someone is in an abusive relationship and/or is in danger, please call the police department. You could be the person to make a difference in a victim’s life and help to stop the cycle of abuse.

There are also opportunities to volunteer to assist victims of crime directly in our city.
