Salute Our Crews: Wear ORANGE Wednesday for Public Works Week

Peoria City staff and residents are encouraged to wear ORANGE this Wednesday, May 20, in recognition of our City of Peoria Public Works Department during National Public Works WeekWhile many of the Public Works crews we see out and about in the City are often touting neon vests, orange serves as a reminder for motorists to watch out for roadway changes and to be mindful of crews in work zones.
“We’re asking residents to reflect on our Public Works team’s contributions to the City and the impact every member has on public infrastructure, health and safety. Our teams do more than fill potholes and plow snow,” said Public Works Director, Rick Powers. “People don’t often consider the broad range of responsibilities our Department undertakes that affects every day aspects of their lives.

Why Public Works is Essential
Public Works performs work that ensures Peoria residents are able to enjoy the basic necessities and the quality of life that is expected within a municipality. As you enjoy your flushing toilet that does not back up with sewage, paved roads and routine garbage collection, take a moment to appreciate the people who work tirelessly, to provide us with some of the following necessities:

Without Our Team:

  • Potholes would incapacitate vehicles.
  • Roads would be impassable.
  • Garbage would not be collected.
  • Stormwater infrastructure would not be maintained, and more flooding and sewer overflows would occur.

“We’re a concept to concrete operation. Engineering, operations and maintenance of roads, drainage, lighting, signs, solid waste, forestry, mowing and more,” said Powers. “With infrastructure management the list is long and the dangers that lie behind the scenes of our work are very real. Our staff is on the front lines, on call 24/7, ready to respond, and they deserve all of the credit and thanks for the work they help our Department accomplish.”
