Revitalization of Leon Young Pavilion and planning for new memorial underway

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – The public is invited to provide input about a memorial honoring Leon Young, the city’s first and only black mayor and vice mayor. A committee will be formed to determine specific plans for the memorial, which will be located in or adjacent to the Leon Pavilion at South Shooks Run Park. Media and the public are invited to attend:

WHAT: Leon Young Memorial Committee Kick-Off

WHEN: Tuesday, Feb. 12, 5:30 p.m.

WHERE: Hillside Community Center, 925 South Institute

An action plan to rehabilitate the Leon Young pavilion structure has been finalized, thanks to a community driven effort. The City’s Parks, Recreation and Cultural Services Department will oversee the revitalization beginning this summer.

All of the improvements at the Leon Young Pavilion are made possible by a Community Development Block Grant and a grant from The Colorado Trust.
