Relatively Speaking is a throwback to another time in the world of genealogy. These are anecdotal stories to inspire those who search for their ancestors. Although, many of these stories are from before the world of computers and certainly the age of the internet, I believe that all of us have benefited from serendipity in our research.
Handy Book Solves Problem
I had been working on my genealogy for nearly 8 years, but had been unable to locate a birth certificate for my 2nd great-grandfather. He had always been told that he was born in Tucker County, West Virginia, but had never been able to obtain a copy from them. In my searching I tried there, and I had the same results also. They had no record. This left me with nowhere to look.
One day as m y mother and I were working on genealogy, she saw in The Handy Book for Genealogists that Tucker County originated from Randolph County. She suggested I try there. To my amazement the record was there! My grandfather had tried to prove his birth all of his life and had failed. Thanks to my mother and The Handy Book I was able to get the much needed record.
