In many types of processes, combustion is used for generating heat, and the recuperator serves to recuperate, or reclaim this heat, for being reused or recycled. Recuperators are generally used in association with the burner portion of a heat engine for increasing the overall efficiency. For example, in a gas turbine engine, air is compressed, mixed with fuel that is then ignited and used for driving a turbine. The recuperator does transfer certain amount of waste heat in the exhaust to the compressed air; thus preheating it prior to entering the fuel burner stage. Since the gases have been pre-heated, less fuel is needed to heat gases up to the turbine inlet temperature. The recuperator could render a gas turbine or heat engine more efficient by recovering some of the energy usually lost as waste heat.
