Portneuf River Cleanup Scheduled for August 18

The annual Portneuf River Cleanup is set for Saturday, August 18.

Scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., volunteers will be picking up debris and trash that have collected on the banks of and in the river over the last year.

“Thanks to the efforts of volunteers, the Portneuf looks better and better every year,” said Hannah Sanger, Science and Environment Division Administrator for the City of Pocatello.

Most volunteers will be spending their time between Sacajawea Park and the J.R. Simplot Company plant. Some volunteers are also needed at the Edson Fichter Nature Area and near City Creek.Interested volunteers are asked to meet at the Pacific Recycling Trailhead (on North Main, just north of Kraft Road where the Greenway Trail ends) and bring their own work gloves. Waders and water shoes are also very helpful. Those who plan on bringing or using a City provided raft or canoe are asked to contact Hannah Sanger at 208-234-6518 or hsanger to help better coordinate the effort and ensure volunteers have properly fitted life jackets.

The cleanup will finish around noon.

The annual event is a shared effort between the City of Pocatello, Idaho State University’s Stream Ecology Center, and Valley Pride.

For more information, prospective volunteers can contact Hannah Sanger at 208-234-6518 or hsanger.
