Pocatello Planning and Development Services Dept. Celebrates Healthy Homes Month, Hosts Lead Awareness Event

The City of Pocatello’s Planning and Development Services Department is celebrating National Healthy Homes Month in June.

First Mayor Brian Blad will proclaim June as Healthy Homes Month at the June 7 Pocatello City Council meeting. The proclamation will be read by Council President Jim Johnston. Then on June 19 from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the Pocatello City Council Chambers, representatives from the City of Pocatello Lead Safe and Healthy Homes Program and Water Department will host a “Get the Lead Out” event. During the informal meeting, officials will discuss lead-based paint hazards, health problems attributed to lead exposure, and more.

“Lead-based paint hazards may be found in homes built prior to 1978,” said Adam Lane, Community Development Block Grant Manager for the City of Pocatello. “We want to protect current and future generations of children from the harmful effects of lead exposure by raising awareness about the importance of healthy home assessments and the impact on overall health.”

Recently, the City received a $1.5 million Lead-Based Paint Hazard Control Grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development Office of Lead Hazard Control and Healthy Homes. The City has used the funding to start up its Lead Safe and Healthy Homes (LSHH) effort. Through LSHH, the City will provide lead-based paint hazard control via licensed and certified contractors at no cost.
