With the first hints of monsoon storms finally making their debut, city of Phoenix has refined the sand distribution system for severe weather.
This storm season, Phoenix will activate select Phoenix park locations as self-service sand distribution sites. Roll-off bins will be dispatched to these locations in advance of large, predictable storm systems that threaten the city with the potential for extreme flooding.
The new park locations allow more parking and accessibly to the sand. Citizens are still required to bring their own bags and shovels, as well as fill the bags themselves. Sand will no longer be made available at fire stations as done in previous years.
“Through new technologies and educating residents about sustainable flood prevention methods, the need for sand distribution has become limited to large scale events,” explains Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Management Director, Lisa Jones. “We encourage residents to explore innovative, long-term flooding solutions like landscaping changes and new products like reusable flood barriers that can be found at local hardware stores.”
