|Phoenix Strengthens Employers of National Service Commitment, as Nationwide Initiative Reaches 500 Employer Milestone
On Wednesday, Dec. 6, the city of Phoenix joins non-profits, businesses, and government agencies across the nation in celebrating the 500th employer to support the Employers of National Service initiative, creating a pathway to employment for AmeriCorps and Peace Corps Alumni. “The city of Phoenix is proud to be one of the first cities in the nation to pledge to be an Employer of National Service, and we continue to strengthen our commitment, said Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton.
“This year, four of our AmeriCorps VISTA members transitioned into a variety of roles at the city, including police forensics, transit, communications, and City Council aide. National Service alumni know how to roll up their sleeves and share their passion for service to address some our community’s most pressing needs. Their commitment to making a difference makes them perfect fits in the City of Phoenix.”
The city of Phoenix hosts eight to 10 AmeriCorps VISTA members each year through our partners at Cities of Service and HandsOn Greater Phoenix. Members serve in the Mayor’s Office, Council Offices, City Manager’s Office, and the Housing, Human Services and Neighborhood Services departments, among others.
This year, the Employers of National Service initiative reached a new milestone when it surpassed more than 500 companies, nonprofits, and public agencies that have signed-on in support of the program.
More than 1.2 million Americans have served in AmeriCorps and Peace Corps. AmeriCorps members serve in communities in the U.S., while Peace Corps members serve abroad. Participants in both programs work as educators, community capacity builders, emergency responders, economic development advisors, disaster preparedness and recovery leaders, and counselors.
