Phoenix Convention Center Welcomes ASU Tourism Students for Global Meetings Industry Day

PHOENIX (April 13, 2018) — Phoenix Convention Center Sales & Marketing and Event Management professionals welcomed Arizona State University (ASU) Tourism students for an interactive discussion about meetings and events on April 12 for Global Meetings Industry Day (GMID). Meetings Means Business founded GMID to highlight the impact that business meetings, conferences, conventions and tradeshows have on the hospitality and tourism industry.

Research from Oxford Economics reveals that in 2016, face-to-face meetings and events supported 5.9 million jobs and produced an $845 billion economic impact in the United States. According to the Greater Phoenix Convention & Visitor’s Bureau, in 2017 the Phoenix Convention Center hosted 67 Conventions, generating $399,934,291 in direct spending to the state and local economy in 2017.

Across the world, meeting professionals participate in international advocacy day events. The Arizona Lodging & Tourism Association (AZLTA) hosted Arizona Tourism Advocacy Day at the State Capitol on April 11. The day’s events attracted lodging and tourism industry professionals to the Capitol to meet with Legislators to highlight the importance of the meetings industry in Arizona.

The Phoenix Convention Center supported GMID on social media using the hashtag, #GMID18 and highlighted career development opportunities within the meetings and events industry during the panel discussion with the ASU students. Panel members shared information about their background, career development and current responsibilities in addition to participating in a Q & A session and facility tour immediately following the panel.

Created in 2016 to raise the profile of the meetings and events industry, GMID receives support from professional organizations, association chapters, corporations, elected officials and business leaders. Events were held throughout North America, Latin America, South America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australia with robust conversations producing more than 40 million social media hits.
