“Civil War Research:
Learning about Your Union Veteran Ancestor”

Our speaker, Jean W. Hibben, is the Director of the Corona Family History Center and a Board Member of the Assoc. of Professional Genealogists. Want to tackle researching your Civil War soldier? It is easier than ever to get the records of a Civil War ancestor. This lecture focuses primarily on Union records, and provides the basic steps on how to recognize that a person fought in the War Between the States as well as the processes that can be used to determine his regiment and company will be explored. Hibben will also discuss steps to navigate the NARA web site for the purpose of ordering veteran records. Other pertinent websites (Ancestry.com, FamilySearch, and Fold3) will be explored. What researchers can expect to find on the records will be discussed, along with tips on less obvious things to search for in the documents received. These are illustrated with copies of Civil War military and pension records. This is a basic lecture, good for beginning researchers as well as those who have more experience in the field of family history.

Workshop:
"Mapping Your Ancestors' Lands"
Ray Roth

This presentation will demonstrate the use of Google Earth and other internet sources and website tools to find the actual location of homesteads and other lands that once belonged to ancestors. Google Earth shows the current overhead views of these land areas and surroundings. Evaluating the views can help resolve historical timelines and events. Ray Roth is a retired engineer who was born in Nebraska and is a descendant of two lines of pioneer families that established homesteads in the 1880s in Nebraska.
