Norman Police Encourage Safe and Sober Driving this Fourth of July

This Fourth of July, friends and family will travel to picnics and barbecues to celebrate America’s independence. While the Fourth of July is a time of celebration for most, the holiday can also create a devastating nightmare for families who lose a loved one due to impaired and unsafe driving.

For this reason, the Norman Police Department will be out in full force implementing its traffic safety enforcement project, Operation Cadence, with high-visibility enforcement in areas that will have an increased level of holiday travel based on Fourth of July festivities. Officers will also be hosting a Know Your Limits alcohol education project at the City of Norman’s Fourth of July Celebration at Reaves Park.

During the 2016 Fourth of July holiday, four people died in collisions on Oklahoma roads. To stop impaired drivers and help save lives, Norman police will deploy traffic projects focused on seatbelt usage, hazardous traffic violations, and impaired driving. Officers will show zero tolerance.

Norman Police offer these safety reminders:

§ Don’t drink and drive. Designate a driver who will stay sober. Give them your keys or call a ride service.

§ If you encounter a drunk driver, call 9-1-1 or 405-321-1444.

§ Put the phone down. Don’t text and drive.

§ Observe posted speed limits, especially in neighborhoods and around parks.

§ Buckle up!

“We want everyone to put safety first and enjoy a fun and memorable Fourth of July in Norman,” said Lieutenant Jeff Robertson. “Designate a sober driver, buckle up, and stay alert. The risks are simply not worth it.”

The Operation Cadence Enforcement Project and Know Your Limits are held in partnership with the Oklahoma Highway Safety Office.
