NOPD Arrests Suspect in Attempted Murder on Dumaine Street

NEW ORLEANS – The NOPD’s Violent Warrant Offenders Squad and U.S. Marshals have arrested Dashawn Jenkins (DOB: 04-26-1997) in connection with a shooting incident that occurred on June 13, 2018 in the 6200 block of Dumaine Street.

On the date of the incident, Fifth District officers responded to a call at about 8:23 p.m. of an aggravated battery by shooting in the area. Upon arrival, officers discovered a male victim lying on the ground and suffering from apparent gunshot wounds to the shoulder and stomach. The victim was transported via EMS to an area hospital for treatment.

Through investigation, detectives learned that the victim had been inside of a residence in the area with his girlfriend when the victim reportedly exited the residence to meet with an individual known as “Deshawn,” who had agreed to purchase a rifle from the victim. The victim’s girlfriend told police that while she was inside of the residence, she heard shots fired and relocated outside, where she reportedly saw the victim lying on the ground and screaming that the subject had shot him. The subject then allegedly fled the scene on foot on Dauphine Street to Tricou Street, then unknown. The victim had also reportedly exited the residence carrying a handgun, which was discovered to be missing following the incident.

As investigation into the incident progressed, detectives were able to positively identify Jenkins as the perpetrator and obtain a warrant for his arrest. Jenkins was located and arrested on August 1 at a residence in the 1400 block of Bienville Street.

Jenkins was booked into the Orleans Parish Justice Center for attempted second degree murder, armed robbery, possession of firearm by a convicted felon and three counts of illegal discharge of a weapon.

Anyone with additional information on this incident is asked to contact Fifth District detectives at 504-658-6050.
