New Mexico State University will be celebrating Military and Veterans Appreciation Week beginning Nov. 5 and ending Nov. 11. The fourth annual event will focus on enhancing and supporting NMSU’s military and veterans community.
“We want to continue to raise awareness of our military and veterans community on campus and have events that highlight their service and dedication to our community and country,” said Hector Sanchez, Military and Veterans Programs director. “It’s important to celebrate our military and veterans because they have sacrificed and given of themselves to protect all our freedoms that we so much cherish in our great country. Military and Veterans Appreciation Week pays tribute to their commitment and devotion.”
The week will begin Monday, Nov. 5 with an opening ceremony at 10 a.m. at the Aggie Memorial Tower at the College of Health and Social Services building. Brigadier General Fermin Rubio will be the featured speaker.
On Tuesday, Nov. 6, the Veterans Day picnic will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Garcia Center Courtyard. There also will be information tables from different local Veteran Service Organizations including, the Las Cruces Vet Center mobile van.
The following day, Wednesday, Nov. 7, the Student Veterans Organization will have an information table outside Corbett Center’s main entrance from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
Thursday, Nov. 8 is ROTC and Armed Forces Recruiters Day, students will have the opportunity to meet with local recruiters in the area behind Young Hall from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. Games, a climbing wall and an information table also will be set up outside.
On Friday, Nov. 9, the NMSU faculty and staff military veteran banquet will be held at the NMSU Golf Course Clubhouse in the banquet room. Doors will open at 6:15 p.m. and the dinner will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.
On Saturday, Nov. 10, the Veterans Day Parade will begin at 3 p.m. in downtown Las Cruces. NMSU’s Army and Air Force ROTC will be marching in the parade. Visit www.lascrucesvetday.org for more information on the Veterans Day Parade.
