New Mexico State University Chancellor Dan Arvizu will lead a walk Wednesday, Oct. 10, from Hadley Hall to Corbett Center Student Union at the Las Cruces campus to celebrate the university’s participation in the national initiative known as Exercise is Medicine on Campus.

NMSU students, faculty, staff and community members are welcomed to join the walk, beginning at 9 a.m. on the east side of Hadley Hall. Participants will then walk to Corbett Center, where Arvizu will sign a proclamation supporting NMSU’s health and wellness efforts. The event is expected to conclude by 9:20 a.m.

“This is a great start. The walk together may be the spark for you to squeeze more walks on campus or at home into your busy schedules,” said Cindy Kratzke, associate professor in the Department of Public Health Sciences in NMSU’s College of Health and Social Services.

This year’s Chancellor Walk is a collaborative effort organized by undergraduate students in the public health administration program, the Aggie Health and Wellness Center, and the Wellness, Alcohol and Violence Education Program.

NMSU has been recognized as the first university in New Mexico to participate in the Exercise is Medicine on Campus initiative and held its first walk in October 2016, Kratzke said. After a year hiatus in 2017, NMSU brought back the walk this year, she said.

NMSU joins more than 100 universities nationwide this month in hosting walks to celebrate the national initiative. Exercise is Medicine on Campus is designed to engage universities and colleges, their students, faculty and staff in ongoing efforts to improve physical fitness, health and wellness across campuses, according to its website.
