ALBUQUERQUE – Outdoor irrigation accounts for a large portion of residential potable water use during the summer but irrigation is necessary in order to keep grass and landscape plants alive and green over the summer.

Many turfgrass irrigation systems are inefficient. More than double the amount of water that plants need may have to be applied in order to compensate for a poor distribution.

New Mexico State University’s Bernalillo County Cooperative Extension Service is hosting a workshop titled “You Can Only Manage What You Measure” from 8 a.m. to noon Monday, Aug. 27, where participants will learn how to conduct a lawn irrigation audit.

“Thirty percent or more of irrigation water can be conserved if an irrigation audit is conducted and necessary adjustments and repairs are made using the information gathered during an audit,” said Bernd Leinauer, NMSU Extension turfgrass specialist, who will conduct the training.

Participants will learn how to use the Internet to determine the amount of water necessary to irrigate the turf area, and how to use all the gathered information for scheduling irrigation appropriately.

The free workshop is limited to 15 people. Participants will have hands-on training and are encouraged to dress for outdoor work.

Register at bernalilloextension.nmsu.edu. The location for the event will be given upon registration.
