DALLAS — Council Member Jaime Resendez is pleased to welcome renowned motivational speaker Gian Paul Gonzalez to speak Friday to approximately 150 student athletes from six Dallas ISD high schools.
Gonzalez is widely recognized for inspiring the New York Giants to their Super Bowl victory in 2011, with his message of “ALL IN.”
Council Member Resendez was initially contacted by Gonzalez about speaking to students in District 5, which includes Pleasant Grove and southeast Dallas.
“We told him we didn’t have any money for that kind of thing, and neither did the school district. Then we sent him the demographics on our District, and he was ’All In,’” said Resendez.
Working with Gonzalez’ agent, Dallas ISD Board President Justin Henry, Trustee Karla Garcia, as well as DISD staff, Resendez pulled together the event to be held this Friday, Jan. 24 at noon at the Turney Leonard Governance and Training Center at 5151 Samuell Blvd.
Gonzalez’ presentation will focus on “Resiliency: How to live ALL IN & Overcome Obstacles,” a message that drives Gonzalez. Students and staff from Samuell, Spruce, Skyline, Seagoville, Lincoln and Madison high schools are expected to attend.
A former NCAA First Team All-American forward from Montclair State University scoring nearly 1,400 points in his 3-year career, Gonzalez played in the NBA Summer League and was offered professional basketball contracts. He turned those offers down to continue his work with at-risk youth. He is the founder and executive director of Hope & Future, an organization dedicated to using athletics and physical fitness to share a message of hope and striving for excellence in inner-city public schools and juvenile jails.
Council Member Resendez will have a short media availability at the end of the program.
