New community dashboard enhances transparency around city services

The City of Fort Worth recently launched an online Community Dashboard in an effort to improve transparency and provide residents with important information in different ways.

The Community Dashboard displays a selection of high-level measures that are related to core city services, as well as census data and other relevant indicators. This data, along with narrative descriptions of trends, is being made available online to ensure that current residents, future residents, visitors and businesses can access information related to municipal services and programs.

Users can find the following measures on the Community Dashboard, along with many others:

  • Emergency incident response times.
  • The percentage of the city’s population that lives within the target distance of a library or community center.
  • Number of small businesses, and what percentage of the city’s tax base is commercial versus residential.
  • Water consumption per capita, per day.
  • Percentage of waste diverted from landfills due to city recycling efforts.
  • Percentage of building inspections completed by the requested date.

“Hundreds of measures are evaluated across the organization on a regular basis, and the city is committed to focusing on and improving areas that are not performing as expected,” said Chief Performance Officer Lynda Johnson.

“This Community Dashboard is a way for the city to share high-level measures that relate to our four key focus areas: Safety, Livability, Maintenance and Growth, and High-Performing Government. The dashboard has been designed to be concise and easy to navigate, so that people can better understand what we do as a government organization, and how we track and evaluate our data.”

The Community Dashboard is one of several steps that have been taken to build a strong community by increasing the availability of data. Other publically-available data sources include OneAddress and the Open Data Portal.
