NBA champion Byron Scott and CEO Charlie Norris to speak about “Slam Dunk Success” at Drury on Oct. 15

SPRINGFIELD, Mo., Sept. 20, 2018 — Drury University is proud to welcome Byron Scott and Charlie Norris as speakers for the newly established Joseph H. George Distinguished Lecture Series. The inaugural event for this annual series will be held at 7 p.m., October 15 in Drury’s Clara Thompson Hall. The event is open to the public.

A superstar team, Scott and Norris will speak about their experience as leaders in their respective fields. Scott is a legendary basketball player and three-time NBA champion who has played for the Los Angeles Lakers, the Indiana Pacers, and the Vancouver Grizzlies. More recently, he has served as coach leading numerous NBA teams, including the Lakers. Norris is a successful business executive who has been the head of several multi-million-dollar corporations. He is currently Chairman at Freshpet Inc., where he has helped lead the company from its early days as a small start-up to its current position as a publicly traded company worth more than $350 million.

The pair will also spend time speaking to Drury students in class on Monday afternoon and address invited middle school and high school students on Tuesday morning, October 16 at Clara Thompson Hall.

The theme for the Joseph H. George Distinguished Lecture Series is servant leadership. Scott and Norris are co-authors of the book “Slam Dunk Success: Leading From Every Position on Life’s Court,” and will speak about their shared philosophy of leadership based in understanding. Good leaders, they say, are those who make others around them better.

The series has been established in honor of Drury’s fifth president, Dr. Joseph Henry George. George served as president of Drury University from 1907-1913, during which time he reversed an existing financial deficit and oversaw construction of new buildings that still exist on campus today, including Burnham Hall and a gymnasium that would later become Springfield Hall.

The lecture series has been established to honor George’s legacy, and is made possible by the generosity of Walt N. George, a current member of Drury’s Board of Trustees and grandson of Joseph H. George.
