VA Salt Lake City and the Paralyzed Veterans of American Mountain States
Chapter to host the largest annual wheelchair sports event in the world.
Salt Lake City, UT: Mark your calendar for the week of June 26th – July 2nd 2016! That’s when close to 600 Veteran athletes will arrive in Salt Lake City for the largest Wheelchair Games in the world. The 36th NVWG will offer 19 events plus one additional sport – triathlon. And keeping with the Olympic theme, bobsledding will be offered as the year’s exhibition sport.
“This is an opportunity for our Veterans to shine. Get ready to watch men and women reach goals and achieve greatness beyond what they thought they could. We are so thrilled to be a part of the magic.” says Steve Young, Director of the VA Salt Lake City HCS.
The National Veterans Wheelchair Games clearly demonstrate the therapeutic value of sports and competition. As presenters of the event, VA and the Paralyzed Veterans of America are committed to improving the quality of life for Veterans with disabilities and fostering better health through sports competition. While past Games have produced a number of national and worldclass champions, the event also provides opportunities for newly injured Veterans to gain sports skills and be exposed to other athletes who use wheelchairs.
Salt Lake City’s experience with the 2002 Olympic Games and the Paralympic Games were definitely a factor in winning the bid. "In addition to the anticipated $3 million in economic impact the event will bring, it is an honor to host the National Veterans Wheelchair Games; to thank and recognize the tremendous sacrifice and service that our great veterans have rendered. We welcome the competitors, families, staff,
and volunteers associated with the Nationals Veterans Wheelchair Games to the State of Sport." says Jeff Robbins, President and CEO of the Utah Sports Commission
