America????????s best amateur boxers start National Tournament May 13-18 at the Salt Palace
Salt Lake City, Utah ???????? May 10, 2013 – The Utah Sports Commission is pleased to announce that the iconic National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions will commence on Monday, May 13th and run through Saturday, May 18th at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Salt Lake City. This is the second time in five years that Utah has played host to this event.
The tournament features nearly 300 of the top boxing prospects in the country fighting for the title of Golden Gloves Champion in their respective weight classes. The featured fighters for the National Golden Gloves Tournament of Champions won their respective Regional Tournaments for the right to compete here in Salt Lake City. There are a total of 31 Golden Glove franchises or regions. Utah is in the Rocky Mountain region which incorporates Utah, Idaho, Wyoming and Montana and is well represented with eight local fighters representing the Rocky Mountain Region. The tournament is being produced by the Rocky Mountain Region Director Larry Fullmer and the Fullmer Brothers Gym.
“It is great to have this event back in Salt Lake City,” said Larry Fullmer, Golden Gloves Tournament Director. “The opportunity to see elite boxers from all over the country does not happen very often. In fact, this is only the second time in forty years that Utah has had this honor and we feel very fortunate to be able be the host city. I know that boxing and fight fans will enjoy a week of great amateur boxing, with the greatest amateur boxing program in the world on display – The National Golden Gloves of America Tournament of Champions.”

In addition to the fighters, there are trainers, judges, fans, and family that will travel to and stay here in Utah for almost a week. In addition, hosting this tournament again is a testament that Utah is a solid destination for boxing and mixed-martial arts.??????
Famous past champions and competitors in the Golden Gloves have included Muhammed Ali, Joe Frazier, Oscar de la Hoya and Floyd Mayweather. The Golden Gloves organization is the primary organization for advancing boxers into the Olympics, professional boxing and mixed-martial arts fighting.
The tournament will run Monday, May 13th through Saturday the 18th with bouts every evening starting at 6pm. The finals on Thursday and Friday evenings including the Championship bouts on Saturday will begin at 7:00 pm. All events will be held at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Hall Number 1.
Tickets may be purchased at the door or at any SmithTix outlet. Monday through Wednesday tickets are $5 and $15 for the Thursday through Sunday bouts. Week passes are available for $40 at either location.
In addition, documentary film-maker James Neilson will have a free screening of a feature length documentary on boxing legend and Utahan Gene Fullmer on Tuesday, May 14th at 9:30 a.m. at the Red Lion Hotel in Salt Lake City, Utah.
Each bout consists of three rounds and three minutes per round. Winners are determined by knock-out or by judges decision. The fights are scored based on punches delivered and punches landed. Boxers wear 10 ounce gloves and protective headgear as do Olympic boxers.
