New Mexico State University’s fourth annual Founders Day will be celebrated from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. Friday, April 20, at the Traders Plaza, south of the College of Business.
Founders Day is an annual celebration of NMSU history and the Aggies who have contributed to making NMSU a great university.
“During Founders Day we celebrate the service of those who have come before us and highlight the many teaching, research and service-related activities that showcase the strengths of NMSU as a leading university in the country,” said Adam Cavotta, chair of the Founders Day planning committee.
This year’s theme is to celebrate the musical traditions of NMSU, including the PRIDE of New Mexico Marching Band and the Aggie Fight Song. Band members will showcase their new marching band uniform, as well as the different uniforms worn by the band over the past 40 years.
The “A” Mountain Staff award will be presented, as well as the recognition of an Aggie Legend.
The Aggie Legend recognition will to go William Clark, director of the Mesilla Valley Concert Band. He was the director of bands at NMSU from 1985 to 1994, then became head of the music department until 2005. He is credited with substantially increasing the number of music majors during his time at NMSU.
He founded the Mesilla Valley Concert Band in 1986 and is also the founder of the Las Cruces Middle School Honor Band and the Las Cruces New Horizons music program for seniors. Clark has received many honors and awards over the past 30 years, including Las Cruces Citizen of the Year in 1988 and New Mexico Music Educator of the Year in 1992. He was inducted into the New Mexico Music Educator’s Hall of Fame in 2007 and received the Governor’s Award for Excellence in the Arts in 2015.
NMSU faculty and staff are encouraged to attend the celebration. Members of the community, retirees, alumni and friends of NMSU are also invited to “come share in our pride as we recognize the many contributions of those who have served NMSU in the past,” Cavotta said.
