Mock Trial with Judge Ron Carrier for Evangel criminal justice students

SPRINGFIELD, MO — Evangel University Criminal Justice students will participate in a mock trial on Thursday, Nov. 29, at 2:00 p.m., at the Greene County Circuit Court. This year’s volunteer judge is the Honorable Ron Carrier.

The mock trial is an annual event for students in the Criminal Law & Procedure class at Evangel. This year’s case is about domestic abuse.

Students will play the roles of the prosecution team, defense team, witnesses, expert witnesses, police officers, victims and suspects. Evangel’s freshman criminal justice students act as the jury.

As part of the course instruction, Evangel has had guest speakers/coaches from the Federal Court Public Defenders Office and the Green County Prosecutor’s Office. The students have met and interviewed people directly involved in courtroom proceedings for their roles.

“Our students work all semester on developing the scenario and researching their individual roles, all culminating in the actual mock trial,” said Roger Moore, director of Evangel’s Criminal Justice Program.

“We are very grateful for the help and guidance of the Greene County Circuit Judges who donate their time to conduct the trial and coach the students,” said Moore. “This year it has been an honor to work with Judge Carrier.”

Prior to joining Evangel, Moore served as the Springfield Police Academy director and training section commander. He holds a master’s degree in Criminal Justice from Lincoln University and a second master’s degree in Business & Organizational Security Management from Webster University.

Graduates of Evangel’s Criminal Justice Program have served as members of the Secret Service, FBI and Justice Department, as well as in state and local police departments, juvenile justice, and probation and parole agencies from coast to coast.
