Mayor Murray statement on U.S. Senate Planned Parenthood vote

City of Seattle, Mayor Edward B. MurraySEATTLE (March 30, 2017) – Today, Mayor Ed Murray issued the following statement after the U.S. Senate passed legislation, with a tie-breaking vote cast by Vice President Mike Pence, to allow states to block Title X Family Planning grants that support health care providers like Planned Parenthood because they also provide legal abortions:

“Vice President Mike Pence’s vengeful vote to allow states to withhold federal grants from thousands of family planning clinics, including Planned Parenthood, shows that this administration is in full, ideological attack mode against working families and women. It is more bullying from this administration. It is more misogyny. It is disgraceful.

“Last week, the White House didn’t have the votes to take health care away from 24 million Americans, but with Pence running over to the Senate to cast his vote, the Trump administration was able to please right wing ideologues this time around by putting the health of half the population at risk.

“It is unconscionable that the White House is continuing its attack on human rights with this targeted attack on women.”
