Logan resident Bill Knopp teamed up with Joe Grimm of Salmon Idaho in Men’s Doubles in Pickelball at the Idaho Senior Games on August 8th and took first place in the 60-64 year old age bracket.
Knopp and Grimm met just minutes before their match, and proved to be a formidable duo, although it started off rough for them in their best 2 out of 3 match. They were quickly down 9-0, and lost 11-5 in the first game to 2 Boise players, but rallied and won the second game 11-8. In the rubber game, they were losing 10-8, and faced 4 match points, before pulling out the win 12-10.
Things progressed more easily from there, as they dispatched the next 2 opponents, until they met the Boise duo again in the finals. That pair had battled through the losers bracket, besting 3 opponents, and their fatigue was evident, as Bill and Joe won the 2 games 11-7 and 11-9 to take first place and win a Gold Medal.
The tournament was Knopp’s first in Pickelball, while Grimm’s experience as an Idaho State champ in Tennis, and as a Pickelball champ in Wyoming, was a huge asset to the team. Both players now qualify to defend their title in the National Senior Games to be played in Minnesota in the summer of 2015.
