KCK Native Aaron Thomas to be Keynote at Annual Black History and Scholarship Banquet

The Unified Government Black History Committee will host the 26th Annual Black History Scholarship Banquet on Saturday, February 17, 2015 at the Jack Reardon Convention Center located at 500 Minnesota Ave. in Kansas City, Kansas. The banquet will start at 6:00 p.m.

We’re proud to announce this year’s keynote speaker, KCK native Aaron Rahsaan Thomas, co-creator and executive producer of the new CBS television drama ‘S.W.A.T’. Aaron began his professional career as a writer’s assistant on Soul Food: The Series and later worked on the staff of other TV series such as NBC’s Friday Night Lights, for which he received a Peabody Award. He has continued to work his way up the ladder joining a diverse group of minority producers that are changing the face of television.

Aaron will address this year’s theme, “Balance the Divide; Differences do not have to divide us.” The television industry has become more inclusive and diverse over the years with a growing number of talented Black writers and producers getting their own shows. We look forward to hearing Thomas’ message on how this increased diversity is helping to balance the divide in the television industry.

In addition to the keynote speaker, the program will highlight the achievements of successful black owned business. Also the most important part of the program will be the presentation of scholarships to help support promising students who have a desire to pursue a higher education.

This year’s event will feature entertainment from the Washington High School Jazz Band. Remember, studying and learning about our past is essential to plotting the course for the future.
