Journalists Chasing Fish on “Chasin’ the Sun”

Panama City Beach’s “Chasin’ the Sun” TV Show Honored at 38th Annual Telly Awards PANAMA CITY BEACH, Fla., March 29, 2017 – In the eighth episode of “Chasin’ the Sun” titled Media Savvy, outdoor journalists experience their first fishing trip to Panama City Beach. “Chasin’ the Sun,” a fishing and coastal lifestyle television show filmed in Panama City Beach, airs Sunday mornings at 8:30 a.m. EST / 7:30 a.m. CST

on Destination America network, which reaches approximately 56 million U.S. households.

“Watching visitors experience Panama City Beach fishing for the first time is always a treat,” says President and CEO of Visit Panama City Beach Dan Rowe. “We’ve seen that novice and experienced fishermen alike are thrilled with the variety of fresh and saltwater fishing options here.”

In this Sunday’s episode, Paul Rackley of Florida Game & Fish Magazine and Bryan Hendricks of the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette discover a healthy and abundant fishery that nearly leaves them at a loss for words. Host Justin Leake explains how artifical reefs – deployed with materials ranging from concrete pyramids to decommissioned U.S. Air Force jets – provide excellent habitat and help alleviate fishing pressure by attracting fish to multiple locations. Local guide Capt. Todd Jones positions his boat above one of the reefs and Rackley witnesses the food chain in action when the cigar minnow he uses for bait attracts a red snapper, which is then swallowed by a goliath grouper. Meanwhile, Capt. Leake and Hendricks use topwater lures to target aggressive amberjack, then drop anchor above a long line of natural hard bottom and entice red snapper to the Gulf’s surface with chunks of live bait. Back at the dock, Rackley finally settles on three words to describe the Panama City Beach fishery: “variety, availability, proximity.” With tired arms and a big smile, Hendricks says, “I’ll be back!”

“Chasin’ the Sun” is produced by Visit Panama City Beach with support from sponsors including national brands such as AFTCO, Yo-Zuri, MarineMax, Sperry, Shimano and ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacation Rentals.

The show will also air on NBC Sports Network in June 2017.
