“Today’s visit by the First Lady to Phoenix focuses attention toward the hundreds of immigrant children housed in our city after being separated from their parents or arriving on their own at the border.
These children and their parents are refugees. They came to the U.S. fleeing the chaos and lawlessness of their homelands. Instead of welcoming arms, they were received as criminals.
A symbolic gesture of kindness rings hollow if not supported by action. We ask for greater transparency. Allow representatives from social service agencies to visit with the children. Allow volunteer groups to bring clothes, toys and books. During their darkest hours, these children need to know Phoenix cares. They are not being housed in a prison. Although maybe to them it seems that way.”
