Joe Brown Pool to be Closed for Renovations starting on April 1

NEW ORLEANS – Beginning on April 1, 2018, the pool and pool house at Joe W. Brown Park (5601 Read Blvd.) will be closed to the public until June 1, 2018 for renovations.

The renovations include:

  • Renovated locker rooms with Americans with Disabilities-Act compliant showers, and new floors and benches
  • Repainting the pool tub, deck, officer areas and locker rooms
  • Installing new LED pool lights and ceiling lights

This $78,000 renovation allows NORD to continue to preserve the investment the community has made in Joe W. Brown Park, Rec Center and Pool. The renovations allow NORD to continue to offer world-class services to the public.

All previously-scheduled programming at Joe Brown Pool from April 1 to June 1 has been canceled. The nearest indoor pool is located at the Sanchez Multi-Service Center (1616 Caffin Ave.) and is opening Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. and on Saturdayfrom 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Since Mayor Landrieu took office in 2010, the City has invested over $170 million in new and improved NORD facilities and has nearly tripled NORD’s programming and operating budget. In 2010, NORD only offered three recreation centers, had only 23 active playgrounds, and 8 summer outdoor pools. Today, NORD offers 12 recreation centers, 35 active playgrounds, and 13 summer outdoor pools. In 2017, NORD received national accreditation from the Commission for Accreditation of Park and Recreation Agencies for the first time, making it one of only 160 parks and recreation agencies in the country to be accredited.

Since 2010, the number of NORD summer camps went from 14 to 41 while the number of NORD teen camps available went from 0 to 13, providing close to 10,000 jobs for local teens across the city. Over 70,000 youth and 10,000 seniors have participated in NORD programming.
