Jesús Sapien Named New Public Transit Director

Phoenix City Manager Ed Zuercher has named Jesús Sapien as the new Public Transit Director, overseeing the city’s local and RAPID™ bus, light rail, and Dial-a-Ride services for people with disabilities.

“Jesús brings significant transit experience to this role, including great familiarity with our passengers’ experiences and needs,” said Zuercher. “His leadership will help the department meet the goals of Transportation 2050 and improve the transit system for all our residents.”

Sapien has worked 14 years with the city, most recently as Light Rail Administrator in the City Manager’s Office. In the seven years prior, he served as a Deputy Public Transit Director, overseeing the largest component of the Valley Metro regional transit system, with over 600 vehicles and more than 40 routes serving 35 million passenger boardings annually.

Sapien holds a master’s degree in public administration and bachelor’s degree, both from Arizona State University.

“I am proud to serve our community in this new role, working with my colleagues throughout the Valley to provide a seamless and efficient experience for our passengers,” said Sapien. “As we continue to grow as a city, transit service will only continue to see an increase in demand.”

The Phoenix Public Transit Department has a more than $324 million annual budget, primarily used to fund bus service operations. The Public Transit Department is a member of the Valley Metro Regional Public Transportation Authority, and a member of Valley Metro Rail, the organization that operates and maintains the Valley’s light rail system. The city of Phoenix funds transit, and other transportation improvements, through Transportation 2050 (T2050) – a local sales tax approved by Phoenix voters in 2015 – as well as county and federal funds.

Sapien will begin his new role on Dec. 10, 2018.
