Interior Design Advice: How to Style Your Bedding with Layers

How to Style Your Bedding with Layers

Your pillows and bed decoration are a key element of your interior design; take a moment remind yourself of a few design basics as you shop.

The key interior design elements include space, line, form, light, color, texture and pattern; keeping them balanced is the key to creating an aesthetically pleasing interior. Consider this balance as you look at your room as a scene, a palette of colors, a collection of shapes, and an ever-changing tableau, as the light moves across the room throughout the day and moonlit night.

In decorating, the “Rule of Three” means objects look better in groups of three. The easiest way to follow the Rule of Three is to make a focal point of three more or less matching items in different sizes, i.e., three different sizes of the same type of object, such as vases, photo frames, or pillows. In the case of a bedroom, the focal point is naturally the bed and the obvious items to be placed are a variety of shapes and sizes of pillows.

When in doubt, arrange pillows from biggest to smallest, back to front. Play with placement, color and patterns for a more casual look. Vary the sizes, colors and textures of decorative pillows to create a variety of looks. For a more contemporary look, use a limited, contrasting color palette and fewer decorative pillows.

In addition to being a key aspect of your interior design, remember that each component of a well-appointed bed serves a specific purpose:

  • Mattress protector: A mattress protector sits on top of a mattress to protect it. Some mattress protectors also provide protection from allergens and irritants, such as dust mites, bed bugs, mold, and dead skin. Mattress protector have no filling and can be used in combination with bed toppers and mattress pads.
  • Bed topper: A mattress topper sits on top of the mattress and provides support. It can also prolong a mattress’s life by reducing pressure on the springs and delaying general wear. Toppers are a great way to add a layer of comfort to your bed. Bed toppers can go on top of your mattress protector or under the mattress pad. We absolutely love our Cloud Top Feather Bed.
  • Mattress pad: Add some extra padding to your bed with a mattress pad. It’s ideal for those who are seeking a little extra fluff. Designed for comfort, it also helps protect your mattress against dust mites, dander and everyday wear.
  • Sheets: Obviously a key component of a good night’s sleep, they come in a variety of styles and fabrics.
  • Duvet/comforter: “Duvet” (“fluff” in French) is often used interchangeably with “comforter”. In the United States most consumers call it a comforter (unless you work at a hotel and they are called duvets). In either case, an essential final topper for your bed.
  • Pillows: An essential aspect of any bed, from décor to the pleasure of sleeping, pillows are key.

Now that we have the basics in mind, here are four ideas for arranging your bed décor.

  • Queen I. Using two standard pillows as a backdrop, center two euro-size pillows in front, followed by two more standard pillows. Add accent pillows in the front of the arrangement.
  • Queen II. For a classic “hotel” look, begin with two hotel pillows and simply place two more standard pillows directly in front of them. Add two accent pillows or two small bolsters in front.
  • King I. Using three euro-size pillows as the backdrop against the headboard, place two king pillows in front of them. Then add a smaller, contrasting accent pillow, either in a bolster or rectangle shape. The decreasing pillow heights emphasize the smallest and most visible pillow up front.
  • King II. As above, set three euro-size pillows along the back of the bed. Instead of king size pillows, use three queen size pillows for the middle layer, then center two rectangular or square accent pillows in front.
