NEW ORLEANS – The NOPD is inviting the public to attend district-centric meetings aimed at providing citizens with updates on the department’s progress in meeting the requirements of the NOPD Consent Decree.
At these meetings, NOPD Deputy Chief of Compliance Danny Murphy and other NOPD representatives will be on hand to provide an update on progress made to meet the requirements of the Consent Decree, and to answer questions from the community on the Consent Decree.
A meeting for citizens in the Fifth District is scheduled for Wednesday, October 10, at 6 p.m. at the Fifth District station, located at 3900 N. Claiborne Avenue. This will take place during the regularly scheduled NONPACC meeting.
On July 24, 2012, the City, NOPD and the U.S. Department of Justice entered into a Consent Decree, which is the most expansive decree of its kind in the nation. The Consent Decree contains a broad array of separate tasks and goals detailed in more than 490 paragraphs and 110 pages; it reflects a shared commitment to effective, constitutional, and professional law enforcement.
The Consent Decree is a broad, extensive blueprint for positive change, and it encompasses sweeping, department-wide reforms that understandably may require years to accomplish fully.
Within the NOPD, the Compliance Bureau is tasked with – among other things – facilitating the implementation of the Consent Decree.
"These meetings are an opportunity for the community to engage with the NOPD about reforms," Murphy said.
