Grand Opening at the Thatcher-Young Mansion

THE STUDIO AND HATCH ACADEMY OF MAGIC & MUSIC
A center for photography and school of Magic & Music

LOGAN, UT ??????? The Thatcher-Young Mansion is getting a new look in the Arts! On January 1, 2011 both the Hatch Academy of Magic & Music and The Studio moved into the Thatcher-Young Mansion. The mansion will now host a variety of arts activities under the direction of Levi Sim, professional photographer and instructor with The Studio. The mansion is still managed by the Cache Valley Center for the Arts and with the addition of new programs and interest, CVCA is looking forward to this new partnership and arts incubator concept. To celebrate this new addition to the Center, there is an open house planned for Saturday, January 22, 2011 from 2 pm to 9 pm in the Mansion (35 West 100 South). There will be a magic ribbon cutting, magic & music performances, historic magic posters and artwork by Mel Torrey, Jason Rich, and Cynthia Hailes on display, followed by refreshments and a string quartet. Detailed timeline below.

After many months of public discussion and board evaluation a new concept has began and it????????s wonderful to see some new activity. CVCA had to look at what was the best fit for the organization, finances, and how the space can best serve the arts community. Many ideas came out of the public meetings and CVCA needed to look at what could be sustainable, help support the existing programs, and have longevity in the arts community. A decision was made in December and a bright new future for the space is underway.

??????This opportunity will help the mansion continue to provide arts instruction and artistic development,?????? said Wally Bloss, executive director at the Cache Valley Center for the Arts. ??????All the artists that utilize the space are full of energy and committed to creating a thriving arts incubator space.??????

The mansion was built by George W. Thatcher and his wife, Eunice Caroline (Luna) Young Thatcher. The space was remodeled in 2001 by CVCA and then mayor Newel Daines to provide gallery space. Levi Sim has been an active leader in the community and created the Cache Valley Photographers, a group of 237 photographers working in the extended Cache Valley area. He is a locally based professional photographer and instructor at Bridgerland Applied Technology and has the energy and drive to make the Mansion come alive. He is working with The Hatch Academy of Magic & Music, Ryan Conger, Kris Krompel and the Cache Valley Photographers and others in the arts community to increase awareness and provide ongoing arts education & instruction opportunities. The Studio provides gallery space, ongoing classes, studio rental, equipment rental, facility rental, and live performance space. This addition compliments the activity already happening in the Bullen Center and Ellen Eccles Theatre. This partnership allows artists to continue to feature their work with extended business hours and new opportunities. The mansion will continue to serve as a beacon for the arts and artists.

There has always been an element of music and classes offered at the mansion, now they will be accentuated by the combination of music and a center for photography and arts. The Hatch Academy of Magic and Music, a unique educational institution offering instruction in both sleight-of-hand and violin performance, will be housed in the second and third level of the historic 1878 home. Named for longtime Logan residents and arts patrons, Anne and Eastman Hatch, the school is conceived as a combination of “Hogwarts and Juilliard” says “deceptionist” Richard Hatch, son of the Hatches and instructor of the magic classes. “When my wife Rosemary, a violinist, and I moved to Logan this fall, we immediately began looking for a place to open our school,” said Hatch. “I spotted an article in the Herald Journal soliciting input on the use of the Thatcher-Young Mansion. When we took a look inside, we fell in love with the possibilities!” The music studio, where Rosemary will offer private violin lessons, is on the Mansion’s second floor, adjacent to Ryan Conger’s guitar and piano studio. Richard’s magic studio is appropriately housed in the Mansion’s mysterious loft and will accommodate both private and group instruction in classical theatrical magic. In addition to their classes, the Hatches plan to offer regular matin????e programs of magic and music at the Mansion one Saturday afternoon each month, beginning on April 9th.
