In an effort to increase international student enrollment at New Mexico State University, a group of two professors and students travelled to China in the summer 2018 to recruit students.

On Wednesday, Oct. 24, beginning at 5:30 p.m. at the College of Health and Social Services, Room 101 A, this group will discuss their participation in the biggest Higher Education Exhibition Fair in the heart of China and their experience traveling to another country with the mission to promote awareness of NMSU.

NMSU’s College of Arts and Sciences “Global Connections” hosts a series of presentations about faculty members’ trips around the world. This past summer Interim Associate Provost for International and Border Programs Rod McSherry was able to make a trip to the heart of China, Xi’an for two weeks. Along with McSherry, Associate Professor of Mathematical Sciences Jianjun Paul Tian, undergraduate student Jiefei Liu and graduate student Bin Bai also attended the trip.

While in China they visited two high schools and interviewed high school graduates who were interested in applying to NMSU.

“I think the greatest success was being able to grow awareness of NMSU in Shaanxi Province. We were able to recruit six freshmen, three are now currently enrolled,” said Tian.

Tian said NMSU is not well known across China but upon learning more about the university the students and families were impressed with the quality and affordability of an education at NMSU.

Tian hopes to see an increase in the number of students from China attending NMSU.

“It is an important part of NMSU’s goal to grow our international student numbers. We are developing plans for long-term, routine recruiting in targeted provinces in China,” he said.
