FENCING: Junior Olympic Fencing Championships Come to Salt Lake City This Weekend

February 15, 2012 (Colorado Springs, Colo.) – With nearly 2,000 entries, one of the largest fencing tournaments for athletes ages 20 and younger in the United States will come to Salt Lake City, Utah this weekend.

The Junior Olympic Fencing Championships will be held from Friday through Monday at the Salt Palace Convention Center in Halls 4 and 5.

Athletes will be competing in individual and team events in each of the three weapons: epee, foil and saber. Cadet (U17) and junior (U20) individual events will be contested as well as junior team events.

“It is terrific to have another Olympic-related event taking place in Utah at one of our world-class facilities that has been a host venue to several key amateur sporting events over the past ten years,” said Jeff Robbins, president & CEO of the Utah Sports Commission. “The event will bring an estimated $5 million to Utah’s economy.”

As the final qualifying tournament for the 2012 Junior and Cadet World Championships in Moscow, the Junior Olympic Fencing Championships will play a key role in selecting the teams. At the conclusion of each individual event this weekend, the top three athletes in the team standings for each weapon squad on the National Point Rankings will be named to compete in individual competition at the Junior and Cadet Worlds in Russia from March 31 – April 9.
