STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-December 19, 2017-The Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue
(SSFR) anticipates favorable conditions this week which will allow a second attempt to burn the
remaining slash piles on Emerald Mountain as early as tomorrow late morning, weather and
“It’s a matter of waiting on the right conditions,” said Fire Chief Mel Stewart. “Right now, the weather
is lining up nicely and I wanted to inform the public in case we move forward with the prescribed burn
The department had expected to conduct the burn in
early November; however, conditions changed and the
decision was made to wait. Based on the current
forecast, the public should expect to see smoke
tomorrow morning through Thursday.
The burn process under the supervision of SSFR will
take place in the Stairway to Heaven trail area. The
public is asked to avoid this area during the burn
operation. Routt County Dispatch has been made
aware of the operation.
The upcoming prescribed burn follows an earlier effort
that occurred in the same area in spring. Once finished,
this will complete the disposal of remaining slash taken from Emerald Mountain during tree removal

burn, please contact Steamboat Springs Fire Rescue at (970) 879-7170 between 8am-5pm.
