03/26/2020|Dr. Vaneesa Cook’s debut book, “Spiritual Socialists: Religion and the American Left,” explores the religious politics that are often associated with the conservative Moral Majority and the Republican Party. Dr. Cook will discuss the history and delve into her own research on how and why liberals have channeled religious motivations into their activism. Dr. Cook has performed extensive research on the role religion plays in politics. In addition to discussion on the United States, her discussion will also include how religiously-based socialist movements formed an alternative to the orthodox, state-centered model practiced by nations such as the Soviet Union or Cuba. Copies of “Spiritual Socialists: Religion and the American Left” will be available for check out and purchase during this event.
